The Only True Hotel Loyalty Credit Cards in Canada
If you’re building a serious travel and points strategy in Canada, the Marriott Bonvoy American Express cards, the personal and business versions, deserve a permanent spot in your walle…sock drawer (I’ll explain).
They are currently the only co-branded hotel loyalty credit cards in Canada, making them uniquely valuable for anyone who wants consistent, repeatable free hotel stays.
Marriott’s footprint is enormous — from dependable mid-tier properties to aspirational luxury resorts — with brands like Westin, Sheraton, JW Marriott, St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, W Hotels, and Edition spread across the globe. Whether you’re booking a quick airport stay or a five-star resort, Marriott points are easy to use almost anywhere.
Card Basics: Personal vs Business
- Personal Card Annual Fee: $120
- Business Card Annual Fee: $150
- Typical Welcome Bonus:
- Personal: ~50,000 Bonvoy points
- Business: ~60,000 Bonvoy points
Bonvoy points are conservatively valued at 0.8–1.0 cents per point.
That means:
- 50,000 points ≈ $400–$500 in value
- 60,000 points ≈ $480–$600 in value
Both welcome bonuses are typically enough for at least one free night, and the minimum spend requirements are very achievable compared to many premium cards.
5x Earning on Marriott Stays
You earn 5 Bonvoy points per dollar when paying at Marriott properties with either card.
Outside of Marriott purchases, these cards are not particularly strong everyday spend cards — and in fact, I generally recommend not putting regular spend on them.
These are “keeper cards” for one very specific reason…
The Annual Free Night Certificate (The Real Magic)
On the anniversary of opening your card (i.e. not on initially getting the card) and each subsequent year, each of the personal and business cards give you a Free Night Award worth 35,000 Bonvoy points.
Even better:
- As of March 2026, you can top up that certificate with up to 25,000 additional points, thus allowing you to book a hotel costing up to 60,000 points per night.
- Certificates from holding both cards can be combined in one booking.
- In two-player mode (you + spouse), holding personal and business versions can mean 4 free nights per year automatically.
At a valuation of 0.8–1.0 cents per point:
- 35,000 points = $280–$350 in value
- That easily offsets the $120–$150 annual fee — even if you put zero spend on the card.
This is why the Bonvoy Amex cards are true long-term keeper cards and why they can be kept in your sock drawer as opposed to your wallet.
To get the top-up amount of 25,000 points, you would need to put it in your wallet briefly and spend either $5000 at Marriott properties (at 5x earning = 25,000 points, perhaps this works for frequent travelers who are loyal to Marriott) or put any general spend of $12,500 on the card (at 2x earning = 25,000 points).
If you only need a few thousand points to top up the 35,000 free night certificate for a redemption, this can easily be achieved with Chexy. Have a read of my blog post on Chexy if you want to learn more about it.
5th Night Free on Points Stays
When booking entirely with points, Marriott gives you:
- Pay for 4 nights, get the 5th night free
This dramatically improves redemption value for longer stays and is a key lever in maximizing these cards. Mutliples of 5 also work, so if you’re looking for an even longer holiday, booking 10 nights gives you 2 nights for free.
Elite Status Benefits
Both cards automatically grant Silver Elite status (15 elite qualifying nights).
To be frank, Silver Elite status doesn’t offer much in the way of meaningful benefits, but it helps accelerate you toward higher tiers. If you stay an additional 10 nights (25 total), you reach Gold Elite status, which provides:
- Room upgrades (subject to availability)
- Late checkout
- Bonus points on paid stays
However, there is an easier way to reach Gold Elite status. By holding the American Express Platinum Card or American Express Business Platinum Card, you receive Gold status automatically, so status is not truly a major perk with the Bonvoy cards.
Advanced Strategy: Leveraging Membership Rewards Transfers
American Express Membership Rewards (MR) points transfer to Marriott at:
- 1 MR = 1.2 Bonvoy points
And during promotional windows, there is often a:
- 30% transfer bonus, making it 1 MR = 1.56 Bonvoy points
Flights are the highest value use of MR points and this should be maximized — however, Bonvoy transfers, especially when done during a transfer bonus, shine when topping up the free night certificates.
Example: One-Player, Two-Card Strategy
Assume you hold both the:
- Personal Marriot Bonvoy Amex
- Business Marriott Bonvoy Amex
That gives you:
- 2 annual 35,000-point certificates
To top each one up by 25,000 points (to reach 60,000-point properties):
- You need 25,000 Bonvoy points per certificate
- During a 30% MR transfer bonus, that equals:
~16,025 MR points per certificate
For 2 certificates:
- 16,025 × 2 = 32,050 MR points total
One way to calculate value is to look at cash-back equivalent terms:
- 32,050 MR points ≈ $320 in value (MR points are redeemable for 1% cash back)
- Annual fees for 2 cards = $270
- Total cash-back equivalent cost for 2 nights = $590 (or $295 per night)
Result:
2 nights at a Marriott property costing your 2 certificates (topped up to 60,000 MB pts each) for the cash back equivalent of $590.
Equivalent cash rates for 2 nights at a Marriot often run:
- $400–$500 per night
- Total cash cost: $800–$1000
Using $590 in cash back equivalent to obtain a weekend getaway that normally costs up to $1000 is substantial value. That’s how you turn credit cards into near-luxury hotel stays.
When simply considering the annual fees of the two cards as the only true out-of-pocket cost, turning $270 into $1000 of value is a real win.
The Stacking Trick (For Paid Stays)
If you’re doing a cash stay at Marriott:
- Start at the Aeroplan eStore
tip: use a browser that does not block cookies so that Aeroplan is able to track the purchase and award you Aeroplan points - Click through to Marriott
- Pay with your Marriott Bonvoy Amex
You’ll earn:
- Aeroplan points (via eStore portal)
- 5x Bonvoy points on your credit card
- Base Bonvoy points from Marriott
- Elite bonus points (if applicable)
This stacking strategy compounds earnings significantly.
Final Verdict: A True Keeper Card
The Marriott Bonvoy Amex cards are not necessarily everyday spend cards but they certainly are worthwhile keeper cards (though perhaps in your sock drawer as opposed to your wallet).
They are:
- Annual free night generators
- Global hotel access tools
- Excellent two-player strategy enablers
- A reliable way to manufacture 2–4 free nights per year
If you travel even once per year and can use the 35,000-point certificate, these cards easily justify their annual fees.
In the Canadian credit card ecosystem — especially for hotel loyalty — they’re in a class of their own.
